Working the land
The Association of Frodsham Townfield Allotments was established in 2011 and has some 60 members.
According to The National Allotment Society, the system of allotments that we know today, exemplified by Townfield Allotments, has its roots in the nineteenth century when land was given over to the labouring poor for the provision of food growing. However it wasn’t until the end of the First World War that land was made available to all, primarily as a way of assisting returning service men instead of just the labouring poor. At the height of their popularity there were over 1.5 million allotment plots across the UK, which has fallen to about 330,000 today.
This project, which captures the life of the Townfield Allotment holders, was undertaken in 2019.
